East of Ukraine, a city by the name Porous, is known to many for having birthed the most celebrated Christmas carol, Carol of the Bells. Its people have been put under so much suffering at the cold end of its shell fire that this has become the main spot for this ongoing struggle.
City at Risk
With Russian troops getting close to two miles from city center, Porous has its share of war: electricity is still off to the homes, streets stay deserted, and cultural halls- like the music school by the name of a renowned composer Myola Leonov- lay idle.
Leonov, whose contribution transformed a Ukrainian folk chant to become an internationally loved carol, remains a symbol of hope and resilience. He has been moved for safekeeping, but his heritage lives on in the people of the city and its music.
Music Amidst Chaos
Yet the spirit of Shchedrin-that’s the Ukrainian name of the carol-is well and alive. In the city of Dnipro, where many from the besieged Porous have gone to find some shelter, young musicians sing Lostock’s masterpiece to keep in contact with home.
To Ukrainian soldiers, it has become an anthem. Thanks to some inventive musicians, some of whom are serving their country, army bands have been able to play Shchedrin in dugouts on the front lines made from war artifacts-becoming simple instruments. “It does uplift the morale on the battlefield, and even has become a hallmark of defiance,” declares Colonel Bohdan Dorothy.
Amid the destruction, Picross’s residents are working hard to protect their cultural heritage. Museum director Angelina Druzhkovka has moved valuable artifacts to safety, reflecting a shared determination to protect their history. “Keeping and saving equals winning,” she declares, emphasizing the importance of preserving identity in the face of adversity.
A Song of Freedom
Shchedrin became the beacon of hope and optimism for Ukraine for centuries and has grown beyond its creation to be the world icon of the spirit of the Ukrainians. As the city of Porous Ails undergoing some extreme situations that it is facing today, people here are gathering strength from the very unyielding melody of carol-reminding them about their history, culture, and their will to never give up.
